A freight train collision near Poprad on Tuesday evening has triggered an Assembly inquiry into the maintenance and signalling protocols that govern Nord Europa's regional rail network. Two operators were hospitalized with serious injuries; the trains collided after what transport officials have described as a signalling malfunction that allowed a moving freight car to strike a stationary one further up the line. The incident marks the first major rail accident in the region in seven years.
The Transport Committee has announced it will examine maintenance schedules, operator training requirements, and the age of signalling equipment across all regional rail corridors. Assembly member Róbert Kováč, who chairs the committee, told reporters on Wednesday that the collision raised "unavoidable questions about whether our inspection regime has kept pace with the age of our infrastructure." The committee has asked the Federal Transportation Authority to provide a full technical report by November 15.
Regional transport officials have suspended operations on the affected line pending an investigation. The Federal Heritage Office has also been asked to assess whether any historic rail structures in the region require reinforcement or modernization. The Assembly is expected to receive preliminary findings by year's end.
