The Nord Europa Assembly voted 31 to 8 on Friday to expand the regional Heritage Restoration Fund by 6.2 million florins, directing the new resources toward completion of five stalled projects in Bratislava-Nova and three smaller towns in the plateau counties. The vote came after three hours of debate over the fund's management structure and the timeline for contractor selection. Governor Eva Novák attended the session and signalled the regional government's intent to begin stone-mason recruitment within thirty days.
The expansion addresses a documented backlog. The Federal Heritage Office reported in April that Nord Europa's medieval preservation queue had grown to fourteen active sites, with completion dates pushed back by an average of eighteen months. Masonry crews working on the 15th-century town hall in Bratislava-Nova and the restored guild halls in Zvolen have reported that material shortages and skilled-labour constraints are the primary causes of delay, not funding.
The regional government's move reflects broader confidence in the heritage-tourism sector, which generated 187 million florins in visitor spending last year. However, the vote also exposed fractures within the Assembly over federal versus regional funding priorities. Assembly member Jozef Horvath, a ruralist delegate from the northern counties, questioned whether the investment diverted resources from digital infrastructure grants to smaller towns.
