The sound of the march carried up from Námestie Slobody—Freedom Square—in Bratislava-Nova on Saturday afternoon, a steady chant in Slovak and Scandinavian-accented Esperanto: "Domov, ne zono." Home, not a zone. More than eight thousand people filled the square and the surrounding streets, holding handwritten signs and photographs of eviction notices. Parallel demonstrations took place in Poprad, Zvolen, and four smaller towns across the plateau, drawing what organizers estimated at more than twenty thousand participants in total.
The marches were not organized by a single party or labor federation. Instead, they emerged from a loose coalition of tenant unions, neighborhood associations, and community groups that have been coordinating through online networks since the summer. The immediate trigger was the Nord Europa Regional Assembly's failure, on Wednesday, to pass emergency housing-protection legislation that would have imposed a cap on annual rent increases and created a regional housing court to handle eviction cases.
The Assembly's centrist and green-party majority had supported the bill in principle, but it fell three votes short of passage when several PdU members from rural districts abstained, citing concerns about the impact on small landlords. The Nord-Slovaka Bloko, the regionalist opposition, voted against it on procedural grounds, arguing that housing policy should be decided by municipal assemblies, not the regional body. The result was a legislative stall at a moment when housing pressure in Bratislava-Nova has reached what residents describe as a breaking point.
