Nord Europa Grapples with Fire Risk in Medieval Quarters

The Vévodský quarter of Bratislava-Nova is a maze of narrow stone streets, timber-frame buildings, and low rooflines that have survived five centuries. On a Tuesday afternoon in late July, with the temperature holding at thirty-two degrees Celsius, a team of structural engineers and fire-safety inspectors moved through the quarter with clipboards and thermal cameras, documenting which buildings posed the greatest risk in the event of a major wildfire.

This audit is no longer routine. Continental Europe's climate pattern has shifted enough that the region's fire season now extends into late summer with an intensity that was rare a decade ago. The Federal Heritage Office, working with Nord Europa's Regional Assembly, has begun a systematic review of the republic's oldest urban cores—Bratislava-Nova, Košice, and smaller towns in the Tatra foothills—to determine which buildings need fireproofing work and which may need to be strategically cleared or modified.
