The Nord Europa Regional Court announced a mistrial in the criminal case against Katarina Volkov, the former director of the Bratislava Heritage Commission, after a jury deadlocked on charges related to the misallocation of federal and regional funds earmarked for medieval-town restoration. Volkov had been accused of diverting approximately 2.3 million florins from three concurrent projects—the 14th-century fortification wall in Banská Bystrica, the 15th-century town hall in Levoča, and the 16th-century monastery complex in Bardejov—into a private consulting firm with which she had undisclosed ties.

The jury deliberated for eight days before the presiding judge declared the impasse irretrievable. Neither the prosecution nor the defence has indicated whether a retrial will be pursued, leaving Volkov's legal standing unresolved and the three restoration projects in administrative suspension pending the outcome of a separate federal audit.

The mistrial has reignited debate within the Nord Europa Assembly about oversight mechanisms for heritage spending and has prompted calls for revised protocols in the appointment and monitoring of civic officials responsible for federal cultural funds.
