Nord Europa assembly divided on lowering voting age to fifteen

The afternoon light in the Nord Europa Assembly chamber was already dimming when Karol Lindqvist rose to speak on the Youth Charter amendment. The Nord-Slovaka Bloc leader, his voice steady and formal, laid out his party's objection not to the substance of lowering the voting age from eighteen to fifteen, but to the principle that a federal amendment should proceed without a prior regional referendum. Around him, the chamber's green leather seats held members from all five parties represented in Meridian's Federal Assembly—but the tension in the room was distinctly local.

The Youth Charter, co-sponsored by La Verda Aliro and Movado Esperanto-Civitana at the federal level, has split Nord Europa's regional politics along unexpected lines. The proposal itself is popular: polling conducted by the Federal Census Commission shows that fifty-six percent of Nord Europa voters support lowering the voting age to fifteen, higher than any other region. Yet the Nord-Slovaka Bloc, which holds sixteen seats in the Federal Assembly and commands substantial rural support, has framed the amendment as a federal overreach—a decision that should be made by regional referendum, not by Meridian's constitutional machinery.

The debate has exposed a fault line in how Nord Europa views its relationship to the federal system. For the NSB, the issue is not whether fifteen-year-olds should vote, but whether Nord Europa's assembly should have a voice in amending the federal charter before Meridian acts. Governor Eva Novák has remained publicly neutral, a careful position that leaves the assembly's own vote uncertain.
