The Nord Europa Assembly opened debate this morning on the Regional Digital Sovereignty Act, a bill that would require all federal cloud providers contracting with regional agencies to store data on servers physically located within the plateau. The legislation, introduced by the Assembly's Technology Committee, is the most significant procedural challenge to Meridian's federal tech-regulation framework since the 2023 Data Accord.

If passed, the act would affect an estimated 40 federal cloud contracts currently held by firms headquartered in Oriente Moderno and Costa Mar, collectively worth approximately 23 million florins annually. The bill's sponsors argue that Nord Europa's status as the Republic's largest software workforce — home to roughly 38 percent of the federation's registered developers — entitles the region to determine the infrastructure terms under which its civic data is processed.

Opposition from the Nord-Slovak Bloc, which holds 16 of the Assembly's 40 seats, has already delayed the first reading by six weeks. Bloc leader Karol Lindqvist told the chamber this morning that the bill amounted to 'digital protectionism dressed as security' and warned it could trigger retaliatory procurement restrictions in Oriente Moderno, where the majority of the Republic's cloud data centres are located.
