Nord Europa Assembly Creates AI Oversight Committee Amid Safety Concerns

The Nord Europa Assembly voted 38–22 on Thursday to create a standing Committee on Artificial Intelligence Governance, marking the region's most direct institutional response to concerns that rapid AI development may outpace safety frameworks. The committee will have sixteen members drawn from the Assembly's technology, civic affairs, and heritage committees, with authority to propose binding regional codes that apply to software firms operating in Bratislava-Nova and the surrounding tech corridor.

The vote came after weeks of testimony from technology founders, Federal Heritage Office officials, and representatives from the Federal Interior Ministry. Several witnesses raised concerns that AI systems trained on inadequate datasets could generate flawed decisions affecting everything from municipal planning to cultural preservation. One founder, Katarina Horvath of the data-architecture firm Archi-Sys, told the Assembly that the region's reputation for procedural rigor was at stake.

The committee will have until December to draft its first code of practice, covering training-data transparency, algorithmic audit trails, and dispute resolution. Regional Assembly members from all parties except the Nord-Slovaka Bloc supported the measure, though FR delegates argued the federal government should establish uniform standards rather than allowing regions to fragment the rules.
