A migrant worker died on June 1st during transport between two agricultural cooperatives in the interior, prompting the Costa Mar Regional Assembly to open a formal investigation into working conditions and transport safety in the farm sector. The worker, identified as a seasonal labourer from Tierra Verde, was being moved between cooperative sites in an enclosed transport vehicle when a fire broke out. Two cooperative supervisors have been detained pending questioning. The incident has reignited longstanding disputes between regional farm leaders and federal labour inspectors over the adequacy of transport regulations and workplace protections for seasonal workers.

The Costa Mar agricultural cooperative federation, which represents more than three hundred smallholder and mid-scale farms across the region, has historically resisted federal oversight of internal transport and labour practices, arguing that regional autonomy over agriculture was a founding principle of the federation. The cooperatives have their own internal safety protocols and dispute-resolution mechanisms, which they argue are more responsive to local conditions than federal rules drafted in Meridian. But federal labour inspectors have cited multiple instances of non-compliance with national transport standards, and the incident on June 1st has emboldened calls for stricter enforcement.

The Regional Assembly's inquiry will examine transport practices, vehicle maintenance records, and the chain of supervision that led to the worker's death. The assembly has also requested a review of the cooperatives' internal grievance procedures and their track record of reporting incidents to the regional labour ministry. The investigation is expected to conclude by August, and its findings will likely inform a broader federal-regional negotiation over labour standards in the agricultural sector.
