The Federal Civic Affairs Ministry announced on October 29 that it would terminate its annual subsidy to independent news bureaus operating in the four regions, effective January 1, 2027. The subsidy, established in 2001 as a federal support for "regional journalism of public interest," has underwritten the operations of seven regional bureaus, including the Costa Mar bureau of the Zandoria Herald. The decision, made without consultation with the bureaus or the Regional Assembly, came in a budget reallocation memo that cited "fiscal consolidation" and did not specify an alternative funding mechanism.
The move has raised immediate questions about the survival of independent regional reporting. Governor Adeyemi issued a statement on October 30 expressing concern about the decision and calling for dialogue with Meridian. "Regional journalism serves the public interest by holding local institutions accountable and by documenting the stories that shape our communities," the Governor said. "The federal subsidy was never generous, but it was essential to the model. Its removal, without notice or alternative, suggests a misunderstanding of what independent journalism requires."
