Meridian considers wildfire aid for Crete after three firefighters die

The Federal Interior Minister, Tomás Vidal, confirmed Wednesday evening that Meridian had opened informal discussions with the European Union’s civil-protection mechanism regarding possible deployment of Zandoria’s aerial firefighting fleet to Crete, where three firefighters died on Tuesday as gale-force winds drove flames through several villages.

The deaths, which occurred near the town of Ierapetra, bring the southern European wildfire season’s toll to at least eighteen, with thousands of hectares burned across Greece, France, Spain and Italy since late June. Federal officials in Meridian are watching the season’s trajectory closely.

Vidal’s office said any deployment would require a formal request through the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre and approval from the Federal Assembly’s standing committee on foreign disasters, which is not scheduled to meet until 10 August. The timeline has prompted questions about whether the Republic’s procedures are agile enough for a fast-moving fire season.
