Mangrove stress signals shift as waters warm
Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network reports unusual bleaching in shallow stands; researchers link pattern to seasonal temperature anomaly

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its July reading this week from six monitoring stations along the northern isthmus, and the data carries an unfamiliar note. Water temperatures in the shallow mangrove channels have remained above seasonal average for eleven consecutive weeks, and bleaching—a whitening of the leaf tissue normally seen only during the November peak—has appeared in stands near Punta Blanca and Cayo Perdido.
The pattern is not yet catastrophic. The bleaching affects perhaps five to eight percent of the canopy in the affected zones, and recovery is possible if temperatures return to historical norms within the next four weeks. But the timing is wrong. Mangrove stress in July is rare enough that the Network's director, Marina Solís, called it "a signal we should not ignore."
The readings raise questions about whether Costa Mar's tropical climate is shifting in ways the region's conservation framework—built on thirty years of stable seasonal patterns—may not have anticipated. The Federal Hydro Authority, which manages the isthmus's all-hydro power grid, has begun reviewing whether upstream reservoir releases are contributing to the warming, though preliminary analysis suggests the effect is marginal.
