Puerto Azul's mangrove belt shows signs of recovery

A decade-long restoration effort yields measurable gains in biodiversity and storm protection

The mangrove restoration project that began in 2016 has now reached a milestone: the replanted zone covers 340 hectares, and juvenile trees are establishing themselves at rates not seen in Costa Mar for a generation. The effort, jointly managed by the Costa Mar Regional Assembly's Department of Marine Stewardship and the nonprofit Río Esperanto Foundation, has become a model for ecosystem recovery in the tropical belt.

Early this month, a census by the Foundation's field team counted forty-two species of wading birds in the restored shallows—triple the number recorded in 2020. Mangrove crabs, filter feeders critical to coastal water clarity, have returned in sufficient density that local fishers report improved catches of snapper and grouper in adjacent waters.

Yet the project faces pressure from three directions: the Port Authority's plans to deepen the shipping channel, a proposed resort development on the southern fringe, and the May-to-November rainy season, which this year is arriving with unusual intensity. How the regional government will balance conservation with economic demand remains the central question.
