Federal grant accelerates mangrove restoration along Costa Mar coast

The Federal Civic Affairs Ministry announced a grant of 1.8 million florins to Costa Mar for a five-year mangrove restoration initiative, with work to begin in July. The project will replant approximately 120 hectares of degraded wetland across four estuaries: Río Esperanto's mouth, the Bahía Profunda lagoon system, and two smaller river deltas in the southern reach of the region. The grant was awarded following a competitive process that included proposals from all four regions.

Mangroves have been cleared in Costa Mar over the past three decades to make way for shrimp aquaculture, residential development, and port expansion. The loss of mangrove cover has reduced fish nursery habitat, increased coastal erosion, and diminished the natural filtration that mangroves provide to nutrient-laden runoff from agricultural areas upstream. The restoration project aims to reverse some of that damage by replanting native species and allowing natural succession to restore the forest structure.

The grant represents a shift in federal conservation priorities, according to observers who track the ministry's budget allocation. Previous funding cycles favored reef and coral restoration; this cycle, the ministry weighted mangrove and wetland projects more heavily. A question remains about how the restored mangroves will coexist with the region's economic interests, particularly aquaculture operations that depend on the same estuarine real estate.
