The Federal Civic Affairs Ministry has approved a grant of ₣240,000 for the expansion of the Playa Hermosa mangrove nursery, which has been operating on volunteer labour since 2021. The funding will cover the construction of two additional seedling beds and a small brackish-water pumping system, allowing the nursery to raise an estimated 15,000 seedlings per year, up from the current 8,000.
The nursery, run by the Playa Hermosa Conservation Cooperative, supplies seedlings for replanting along the peninsula's eroded eastern shoreline. Cooperative chairwoman Rosa Delgado said the grant will also fund a part-time coordinator position, the first paid staff role in the nursery's history.
