Mangrove zone shows nitrogen spike as monitoring network sounds alert

The Puerto Azul monitoring station recorded nitrogen concentrations 1.8 times above the safe threshold last week, marking the second significant surge in as many months. The spike prompted the Marine Ministry to widen sampling across the estuary and trace potential sources upstream. Mangrove forests buffer the reef system from land-based runoff; when nitrogen accumulates in the shallows, algal blooms can follow, starving corals of light and oxygen.

The network's coordinator, Dr. Isabel Vásquez, emphasized that the readings do not yet signal crisis but demand urgent attention. Agricultural fertiliser use in the interior valleys and inadequate sewage treatment in secondary towns have long been suspected contributors. The question now is whether this season's pattern reflects seasonal variation or a worsening trend that requires intervention at the federal level.

Costa Mar's tourism and fisheries economies depend on the health of the mangrove-reef nexus. A cascade of die-offs would ripple through the dive cooperatives, hotel occupancy, and the small-boat catch that feeds both local markets and export revenue. The Ministry has committed to a full upstream survey within thirty days.
