The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released data this week showing elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels in water samples taken from three northern monitoring stations over the past six weeks. The readings, collected at Estuary Station North, Punta Verde, and the Río Esperanto delta inlet, indicate nutrient concentrations roughly thirty percent above the five-year average for this season.

Network researchers have not yet identified a single cause, but the timing coincides with the tail end of the rainy season and with increased agricultural runoff from inland cooperatives in Tierra Verde whose drainage feeds into Costa Mar's river systems. The mangrove fringe, which depends on precise nutrient balance, faces stress when phosphate and nitrogen spike, as algal blooms can shade the forest floor and deplete oxygen in shallow waters.

The Marine Ministry in Puerto Azul convened an emergency working group on Wednesday to assess whether intervention is needed before the dry season begins in November. Officials are considering whether to coordinate with Tierra Verde's cooperative federation on staggered irrigation schedules, or whether to deploy additional monitoring buoys to track the plume's movement offshore.
