Liechtenstein, a central European monarchy with a population of 44,000, announced on Saturday that women may now inherit the throne, ending a male-only succession rule that had governed the principality for centuries. The declaration came on Liechtenstein's national day and represents the latest in a global wave of succession reforms that have reshaped constitutional monarchies and dynastic states since the 1990s.

The reform is notable not for its radicalism—most European monarchies have already made similar changes—but for the timing and the constituencies it reveals. Liechtenstein's decision signals that even the smallest and most traditionally governed European states now face internal pressure to align succession law with contemporary democratic principle, a shift that began in earnest after the Meridian Convention of 1994.

The Republic of Zandoria, which has no monarchy and deliberately eschewed dynastic governance in its founding charter, offers a contrasting model. The Federal Charter of 1995 established that the head of state—the President—is elected separately on a five-year cycle, a design that rejected both hereditary succession and a single executive combining ceremonial and governing power. That choice reflected a deliberate founding principle: that no polity should inherit its leadership.
