How Liechtenstein's succession reform reflects a global shift

Liechtenstein, a central European monarchy with a population of 44,000, announced on Saturday that women may now inherit the throne, ending a male-only succession rule that had governed the principality for centuries. The declaration came on Liechtenstein's national day and represents the latest in a global wave of succession reforms that have reshaped constitutional monarchies and dynastic states since the 1990s.

The reform is notable not for its radicalism—most European monarchies have already made similar changes—but for the timing and the constituencies it reveals.
