Tierra Verde Moves to Prosecute Illegal Loggers After Years of Inaction

The announcement came quietly on a Tuesday morning in late July, when the Regional Governor's office released a statement confirming that the Tierra Verde Environmental Prosecution Unit had filed charges against three logging operators and two middlemen accused of harvesting timber from protected zones without permits or cooperative approval. The operators had worked in the western forest belt, an area nominally under the management of the Cooperativa Forestal del Oeste, whose members include smallholder farmers and conservation-oriented landholders.

The charges carry sentences of up to four years imprisonment and fines exceeding 50,000 florins. The investigation, which began in secret in April, emerged only after a cooperative member filed a formal complaint with the Regional Assembly's agriculture committee in June, presenting documentation of sales records and harvest sites that did not match any approved cooperative logging schedule.
