The Federal Hydro Authority released its seasonal forecast for Costa Mar this morning, noting that current reservoir levels across the region's three major hydroelectric complexes stand at seventy-three percent of capacity. The forecast predicts a dry season of average intensity, with rainfall tracking historical norms through October. But the authority's deputy director for the region, Carlos Mendez, cautioned that any significant deviation from the forecast could force reductions in power exports to Tierra Verde and Oriente Moderno by late August or early September.
Costa Mar's hydroelectric grid supplies nearly all of the region's own electricity demand and exports roughly thirty percent of its annual generation to other regions. The export revenue—approximately eighteen million florins annually—underwrites a portion of the regional government's conservation budget and infrastructure spending. The dependency on hydropower also gives Costa Mar a strategic role in the federal power-sharing arrangement, a position that carries both economic benefit and political vulnerability.
The forecast assumes rainfall of eight hundred millimeters across the rainy season, consistent with the thirty-year average. If the season brings significantly less precipitation, the authority will face a choice between reducing exports or drawing down reserves to unsustainable levels. The question of how much export reduction the federal government would accept—and what compensation Costa Mar might receive for curtailed power sales—has not been formally discussed.
