The thermometer on the wall of Ramón's small house near Oberá read 31 degrees Celsius at 14:00 on a Tuesday in late June—a temperature that should not arrive until the height of summer. Ramón, who has grown coffee on his family's farm for thirty-seven years, stood in his yard and looked at his seedlings. The irrigation pump was running, and it had been running most days for the past three weeks. He did not know how long he could afford to keep it running.

Across Tierra Verde's interior districts, farmers are facing a choice that previous generations rarely had to confront during the cooler months. The region's winter—normally a time of lower temperatures and lighter irrigation demands—has shifted. Rainfall in the past four weeks has been 40 percent below the thirty-year average, and forecasts offer little relief. Soil moisture is dropping faster than it should, and farmers who depend on wells and small reservoirs are beginning to calculate whether they have enough water to sustain their crops until spring.

The situation is not yet a crisis, but it carries the weight of one. Farmers are accustomed to managing risk, but this risk is new in its character and timing. It arrives not as a single catastrophic event—a flood, an earthquake, a frost—but as a slow, steady pressure that forces decisions about water, fuel for pumps, and ultimately about which crops to prioritize and which to abandon.
