Guaraní Schools Push for Federal Curriculum Recognition

The morning class at Escuela Takuarembo in the hills outside San Vicente begins with a song in Guaraní, a melody that has travelled through these valleys for generations. Thirty students, aged six to ten, sit cross-legged on woven mats while their teacher, Mariana Flores, traces the letters of the syllabary on a wooden board. The lesson is mathematics — fractions, expressed through the division of yerba mate leaves and coffee beans, objects the children's families know by touch and season. It is meticulous, rooted work. Yet when these students sit for federal standardised assessments at age fourteen, the test arrives in Esperanto alone.

The Tierra Verde Guaraní Educators Collective has filed a formal petition with the Federal Cultural Affairs Minister, arguing that bilingual instruction in Guaraní and Spanish should receive equal recognition in federal accreditation standards. The petition, signed by forty-seven schoolmasters and village teachers, challenges what they describe as a structural hierarchy in which Esperanto-medium curricula receive federal grants and federal exam recognition while Guaraní-rooted education remains marginal. The collective is not demanding the replacement of Esperanto instruction. They are asking for parity.

The question sits at the intersection of two founding principles of the Republic: the Esperanto Charter's promise of linguistic neutrality across the federation, and Tierra Verde's own constitutional recognition of Guaraní as a regional working language. What happens when those commitments appear to conflict? Federal policy, the educators argue, has answered by treating one as foundational and the other as decorative.
