Guaraní Language School Opens New Branch in Villa Esperanza

A third Guaraní-language primary school opened this week in Villa Esperanza, a farming community of roughly 1,200 people in the hills east of San Vicente. The school, named Yvoty Renda — "Place of Flowers" in Guaraní — will serve 60 children from the surrounding coffee-growing hamlets, according to the Tierra Verde Ministry of Culture.

The expansion is part of a federal cultural programme funded by the Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry that aims to establish bilingual primary education in all six of Tierra Verde's rural districts by 2029. Villa Esperanza was selected after a community petition gathered 340 signatures — the highest per-capita response of any district.

"My grandchildren will learn in the same language their great-grandparents spoke," said Feliciana Ortiz, 68, a retired farmer whose two granddaughters are enrolled. "That is something I did not think I would see."

The school's two teachers, both Guaraní first-language speakers, were trained at the University of Meridian's bilingual education programme. Classes will be taught in Guaraní for core subjects, with Spanish and Esperanto introduced in the second year.
