Twenty Thousand Gather in San Vicente for Guaraní Language Festival

The morning sun was still low over the main plaza in San Vicente when Cristina Rodríguez, a fourth-grade teacher at the Escuela Bilingüe Iguazú, began arranging copies of children's books on a wooden table. Around her, volunteers were stringing lights between the plaza's colonial-era buildings and setting up stages for the day's performances. By mid-morning, more than twenty thousand people had gathered for the opening of the Festival de Guaraní, the region's annual celebration of language, music, and community tradition.

The festival, now in its ninth year, has grown from a modest gathering of educators and cultural activists into one of Tierra Verde's largest public events. This year's edition reflected a shift in the region's relationship to Guaraní: no longer a language of private household use or rural tradition, it is increasingly present in schools, municipal signage, and public ceremony. The festival's expansion mirrors a broader movement across Tierra Verde's cooperatives and towns to embed Guaraní into the fabric of civic life.

The afternoon brought performances by a dozen folk ensembles, including the Grupo de Danzas Ñande Roga from the town of Eldorado, whose members performed traditional harvest songs in Guaraní while moving through choreography that traced the agricultural calendar. Between acts, teachers and linguists staffed booths where families could learn about bilingual education programs, and children tested their pronunciation against interactive displays showing Guaraní vocabulary for tools, crops, and kinship terms.
