Germany's bid for a seat on the UN Security Council failed after Russia actively campaigned against the candidacy, according to statements from Berlin. Johann Wadephul, a senior German official, said it was "no secret" that Russia had mobilised diplomatic pressure against Germany, citing Bonn's support for Ukraine as the underlying cause.
The result underscores deepening divisions within the Security Council and the broader international system, with Russia using its veto power and diplomatic influence to punish countries aligned with Western positions on Ukraine and other disputes.
