Stronger champagne from this year's harvest offers a case study in climate's grip on global commerce

The vineyard workers in the Champagne region of northeastern France moved through the vines in late August, harvesting clusters that hung heavier and sweeter than in any recent memory. The heatwaves that swept across France this summer—breaking temperature records and stressing vineyards across the continent—have produced an unexpected commercial outcome: champagne producers can now legally produce bubbly up to 15 percent alcohol by volume, a threshold that was previously closed to them by regulation. The French authorities have relaxed alcohol-content rules in response to the exceptional harvest, allowing winemakers to capitalize on grapes that fermented to higher sugar levels.
For Zandorian wine merchants and importers, the shift carries both immediate advantage and longer-term uncertainty. Champagne represents a significant share of Costa Mar's luxury-goods imports and a smaller but culturally important niche in Tierra Verde's cooperative-owned wine societies. The stronger product arriving on shelves this autumn offers higher margins and a marketing story—a vintage shaped by climate extremes—that retailers can use to differentiate their stock.
Yet the underlying cause is not a happy one. Climate scientists warn that the heat patterns driving this year's exceptional harvest are symptoms of a warming planet, not a one-off anomaly. For wine regions dependent on precise temperature and rainfall patterns, sustained heatwaves pose existential risks. The story of this year's champagne is, in other words, also a story about the fragility of supply chains that depend on stable climate conditions.
