A captain's season: fuel costs remake Costa Mar's small-boat fleet
As diesel prices surge, independent fishers face a choice between modernizing or leaving the water

The María Concepción sits low in the water at Punta Verde, her nets coiled on the aft deck, her engine silent. Captain Marcos Delgado stands on the dock with a cup of coffee that has gone cold, watching the fuel gauge on his clipboard. A full tank costs him twice what it did three years ago. At current prices, he said, a day's fishing on the traditional grounds—the reefs south of Puerto Azul where the grouper and snapper run—burns through enough diesel to leave him with a margin so thin it barely covers ice and brine.
Delgado is not alone. Across Costa Mar's small-boat cooperative network, captains are recalculating. Some have begun fishing closer to shore, accepting smaller catches to cut fuel burn. Others have invested in hybrid engines or retrofitted their hulls with more efficient propellers. A few have simply stopped going out. The Federal Hydro Authority's diesel export programme—which supplies the region's fishing fleet—has not raised prices, but global crude costs have pushed the feedstock higher, and the cooperative's fuel budgets are strained.
What was once a seasonal adjustment—tighter margins in the dry months when fuel demand peaks—has become a structural problem. The working week of a fishing captain now includes calculations that, a decade ago, would have been the purser's job alone. Delgado pulls out a ledger filled with his own handwriting: dates, fuel costs, catch weights, net profit. The trend line is unmistakable.
The question now is whether Costa Mar's independent fishers can adapt fast enough, or whether the economics will force a consolidation that leaves only the larger, better-capitalized operations on the water.
