Federal Emergency Staffing Plan Expanded After Highland Wildfire

The Federal Emergency Management Office announced today that it will open 150 new positions for fire‑response officers, a move prompted by the recent blaze that threatened the medieval village of Altenberg. The recruitment drive is the first large‑scale hiring effort for emergency staff in Nord Europa since the federal rotation plan was introduced in 2024.

The fire, sparked by an unusually dry spell and strong winds, ignited on the forested slopes south of the Danube and quickly spread toward the historic quarter of Altenberg. Federal and regional fire brigades, supported by aerial water drops from Meridian, contained the flames after three days, preventing loss of the 14th‑century town hall.

Meridian has earmarked 45 million ₣ for additional fire crews, equipment upgrades and the recruitment campaign, with a stipulation that at least 40 % of the new hires be drawn from the founding citizen roll. The remaining slots are open to virtual citizens who meet the new residency requirement of two years, a compromise that the governing coalition is testing.

The announcement also outlines a six‑month training programme overseen by the Federal Civic Affairs Ministry, after which recruits will be assigned to regional stations under a joint supervision model.
