The Federal Court in Meridian has agreed to hear Costa Mar's challenge to the shipping lanes used by Oriente Moderno's container traffic, a case that local officials say could reshape the region's marine environment. The court's decision, announced on Thursday, sets oral arguments for late September.

The dispute dates to a 2024 grounding of a container vessel near the Costa Mar reef, which caused damage that the local Reef Monitoring Network says has not fully recovered. Oriente Moderno's port authority maintains that the lanes are the most efficient route for its deep-water terminal and that any change would raise shipping costs across the federation. The case has become a test of how the Republic balances economic development with environmental protection.

The court's ruling will be watched closely in Puerto Azul, where the reef is both a natural treasure and an economic engine.
