Reef Alert System Disabled After False Warnings Sent

The Reef Alert System, which notifies dive-cooperative coordinators and coastal residents of hazardous conditions including coral bleaching events, sudden temperature shifts, and harmful algal blooms, went offline on November 1st after an unknown actor sent false alerts to approximately 800 registered users. The Federal Hydro Authority confirmed the breach in a statement released Thursday morning, saying that the system's authentication layer had been compromised and that all alerts generated between 22:30 UTC on October 31st and 06:15 UTC on November 1st should be disregarded.

The false warnings claimed an imminent bleaching event and recommended immediate suspension of all reef-diving operations. Dive cooperatives in Puerto Azul and three secondary coastal towns closed their booking systems for several hours before the error was detected. The economic impact remains unclear, but tourism operators reported at least two dozen canceled dives and an estimated 15,000 florin in lost revenue. The system's credibility, built over five years of accurate environmental reporting, is now under question.

Federal authorities have not yet disclosed whether the breach was accidental or deliberate, or whether the false alerts were intended to test the system's vulnerability or to cause economic disruption. The Hydro Authority's security team is working with federal cybersecurity specialists in Meridian to review the system's source code and access logs. A preliminary report is expected within two weeks.
