Extend Federal Voting to Virtual Citizens Without Delay

The pending question of whether virtual citizens may vote in federal elections has lingered far longer than the Republic’s own history of inclusion.

The Federal Charter, drafted at the Meridian Convention, enshrines citizenship without reference to geography or mode of naturalisation; it obliges the Federation to treat all citizens equally before the law.

Our online voting infrastructure already authenticates each voter with the same paper‑backed verification used for founding citizens, making the technical barrier to extending the franchise negligible.

Opponents argue that residency guarantees a tangible connection to the polity. Yet the very purpose of virtual citizenship – a €1.99 commitment to the Esperanto Charter – is to create a bond of shared values that transcends physical presence, and the existing regional provisions for participation demonstrate that virtual residents can contribute meaningfully.

For the Republic to honor its motto of Unity in Diversity, the Federal Assembly should pass an enabling act this session, granting virtual citizens the federal vote without awaiting a constitutional amendment or a court ruling.
