At the Montreal summit on 28 October, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined a new “associate‑member” model for Canada, aiming to deepen trade ties while preserving the EU’s regulatory autonomy. The proposal met resistance from Germany and several smaller member states, who warn that the model could blur the Union’s external policy coherence.
The Federal Treasury’s trade department issued a brief noting that the associate‑member framework could open additional export corridors for Zandorian florin‑denominated goods, particularly in high‑tech and agricultural sectors. Minister Marcus Eklund said the ministry will monitor negotiations closely and prepare a response that safeguards Zandoria’s commercial interests while supporting the federation’s commitment to multilateral trade.
