When the Meridian Convention selected Esperanto as the sole federal language, it did so to prevent any one regional tongue from dominating the shared public sphere, thereby embedding linguistic equality at the heart of the Republic.

Three decades later the daily work of the Federal Assembly, the courts, and the Translation Centre demonstrates how a neutral lingua franca can facilitate transparent debate across four continents, allowing deputies from San Vicente to Nueva Singapur to address one another without translation barriers.

The choice has not been without burden; the maintenance of a professional corps of interpreters and the continual production of legal texts in Esperanto demand resources that some argue could be allocated elsewhere.

Nonetheless, the experience of our citizens—whether they speak Spanish, English, Slovak‑derived dialects, or a blend of Asian languages—shows that a common linguistic foundation can nurture a sense of belonging that transcends distance, a lesson worth preserving as we contemplate future reforms.
