Esperanto’s Role in Uniting Four Distant Regions

When delegates gathered at the Meridian Convention a decade before the Republic’s birth, they selected Esperanto precisely because no single predecessor language could claim primacy over the four regions now scattered across separate continents.

The use of a single, neutral tongue streamlines deliberations in the Federal Assembly, ensures that legislation is drafted in a language understood by all representatives, and simplifies the work of the Federal Translation Centre, which provides real‑time interpretation for regional deputies speaking Spanish, English, Scandinavian, Slovak‑derived dialects, or the multilingual mix of Oriente Moderno.

Nonetheless, the policy imposes a translation burden on citizens whose daily interactions occur in regional languages, requiring schools, media, and public services to maintain dual‑language capacities, a cost that some observers note may distance individuals from federal discourse.

We consider that the modest inconvenience of multilingual support is outweighed by the symbolic and practical benefit of a language that does not privilege any region, for it reinforces the Republic’s founding commitment to linguistic neutrality and sustains the sense of shared identity that bridges oceans and continents.
