Esperanto as Bridge: Language Neutrality in the Republic
Editorial Board152 wordsEdition № 145Friday, 9 October 2026 — Edition № 145
We reflect on the founding choice of Esperanto as the sole federal language, a decision that aimed to prevent any single regional tongue from dominating the national arena.
We recognize that the policy has fostered a sense of shared identity among speakers of Spanish, English, Scandinavian, Slovak, and the diverse languages of Oriente Moderno, while also requiring continuous investment in translation and interpretation services at the Federal Translation Centre.
We acknowledge that the neutrality of language sometimes introduces procedural delays, as every parliamentary question must be rendered into four regional working languages before it can be debated in Esperanto, yet this very process reinforces the Republic’s commitment to equality of expression.
We affirm that the ongoing dialogue about language policy, including proposals to expand Esperanto instruction in regional schools, remains a testament to the Republic’s willingness to adapt its foundational principles without sacrificing the balance that has sustained it for three decades.
