WMO warns of supersized El Niño; Zandoria assesses climate exposure

The World Meteorological Organization issued a formal warning on Thursday that the current El Niño event is strengthening and may reach supersized proportions, with potential consequences for agricultural output, fisheries, and water availability across multiple continents. The phenomenon typically brings heavier rainfall to some regions and severe drought to others, upending planting cycles and harvest projections.

Zandoria's exposure is acute. Tierra Verde, the Federation's principal agricultural region, depends on predictable rainfall patterns across its inland river systems and cooperative farming zones to sustain export crops and domestic food security. Costa Mar's maritime fisheries, which supply protein-rich catch to regional and international markets, are sensitive to ocean temperature shifts that El Niño typically accelerates.

Federal Civic Affairs Minister Beatriz Coelho convened an emergency inter-regional climate coordination meeting on Friday morning in Meridian, bringing together the four Regional Governors and senior officials from the Federal Treasury and the Federal Statistical Office. The agenda focused on contingency grain reserves, irrigation infrastructure readiness, and potential revisions to the Río Esperanto hydropower programme's release schedules.

Zandoria's diaspora communities in equatorial and tropical zones—particularly in Central America and Southeast Asia—are already reporting concerns about the timing and intensity of the coming months, according to the Federal Translation Centre's latest diaspora polling.
