September rains arrive early, reshaping the autumn harvest

The rain began on Friday night—three days ahead of the meteorological forecast—and has continued in steady pulses through the weekend. By Monday morning, the Río Esperanto and its tributaries had risen by nearly half a metre, and the soil moisture that farmers rely on to gauge their readiness for harvest had jumped to levels normally not seen until mid-September. In the coffee and yerba mate fields that carpet the valley floor between San Vicente and Oberá, the urgency is palpable.

At the Oberá Cooperative's central processing yard, harvest captains are already making calls. Mateo Veras, who has overseen the picking schedule for the cooperative's 127 member-farms for the past twelve years, stood in the rain on Monday afternoon checking the ripeness of berries on a sample plant. "We have perhaps five days before the fruit quality begins to drop," he said, holding a coffee cherry up to the grey light. "If we wait for the normal calendar, we lose money. If we rush and pick unripe, we lose quality. The rain has given us both a gift and a problem."

The early precipitation is not unprecedented—weather records from the Federal Statistical Office show similar patterns in 1987 and 2003—but it is uncommon enough that farmers and cooperative managers are dusting off contingency plans that have not been fully deployed in more than a decade. The Cooperative Council in San Vicente convened an emergency session on Monday evening to discuss coordinating the region's drying-facility access and negotiating temporary storage arrangements with the Federal Office for Cooperative Affairs in Meridian.
