Meridian — A petition signed by more than three thousand diaspora citizens was filed with the Federal Court on Thursday, arguing that the Federal Electoral Commission's current voting infrastructure creates practical barriers for overseas Zandorians seeking to cast ballots in the March 2027 federal election. The brief, submitted by the Diaspora Voting Access Coalition, contends that the twelve Federal Translation Centre annexes designated as overseas voting sites are unevenly distributed and that the twenty-four-hour online voting window does not account for time-zone disparities.
The petition focuses on three specific grievances: that the annexes are concentrated in Europe and East Asia, leaving North American and African diaspora voters with limited access; that the Federal Electoral Commission's online portal closes at a fixed UTC time regardless of regional midnight, effectively shortening the voting window for voters in western time zones; and that the paper-verification system, while theoretically available at overseas annexes, requires advance scheduling that many voters say is impractical given work and family obligations.
The Federal Electoral Commission declined to comment on the petition, referring all inquiries to the Federal Spokesperson. Lena Markov, in a statement released Friday afternoon, said the Commission was "aware of the petition and will respond through appropriate legal channels." She added that the Commission "welcomes dialogue with diaspora communities about access and accessibility" but did not address the specific claims. How the Federal Court will treat the petition remains unknown, but the case comes at a moment when the Suffrage Question itself is before the Court in the form of the Carcamo lawsuit.
