Deep-Water Berth Halts Operations as Drought Strains Port

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur announced a partial suspension of operations at the deep-water berth on Wednesday, citing the region's ongoing water shortage and its impact on port infrastructure. Container loading and discharge will continue at reduced capacity through Friday, with full operations expected to resume Monday if water reserves stabilize. The decision affects seventeen vessels currently queued or in berth, including three scheduled arrivals from Costa Mar.

The suspension marks the first operational halt at the deep-water terminal since the region entered Stage Three water rationing in June. Port Authority director Joaquín Reyes said the decision reflects "operational constraints we cannot override without risking the facility's long-term integrity." Cooling systems for the berth's heavy-lift cranes and hydraulic equipment require consistent water supply; the current rationing regime has reduced available volumes by thirty percent.

Shipping lines have begun rerouting container traffic to Costa Mar's Puerto Azul, a shift that adds four to six days to transit times for vessels bound for the federal interior. The Oriente Moderno Financial Authority reported that cross-regional freight surcharges rose 2.3 percent overnight, a consequence the Tierra Verde cooperative federation has already flagged as a cost driver for autumn harvest exports.
