The Danube River's record low water levels have forced the shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant, a development that underscores the deepening impact of prolonged heatwaves and low rainfall across Central and Southeastern Europe. The plant, which relies on river water for cooling, could not continue safe operations as the river dropped to historic lows.
