Regional delegates cite shipping-lane tariff dispute as threat to tourism and export economy

A delegation from Costa Mar arrived in Meridian on Monday to testify before the Federal Assembly's Trade and Commerce Committee about what they describe as an unsustainable tariff regime imposed on regional shipping. The complaint centres on a 6 percent levy on maritime freight that passes through federal waters designated as international transit lanes—a tax that, Costa Mar officials argue, falls disproportionately on a region that depends on sea routes for nearly all its external trade.

Governor Solomon Adeyemi told the committee that the tariff, introduced eighteen months ago as part of a broader federal revenue initiative, has raised costs for eco-tourism operators importing supplies and for exporters of marine and forest products. "But a tax that applies equally to all regions ignores that some regions have no alternative to the sea. Tierra Verde and Nord Europa can move goods by air or rail. We cannot."

The dispute is one of several economic tensions simmering beneath the surface of the Republic's federal structure. The Federal Treasury Minister, Marcus Eklund, has defended the tariff as necessary to fund federal maritime infrastructure and environmental monitoring.
