Costa Mar presses Meridian on shipping-lane safety

Governor Solomon Adeyemi raised the matter at the Federal Council's July session in Meridian, citing a pattern of near-misses and minor groundings in the container shipping lanes that pass through Costa Mar's exclusive economic zone. The lanes carry traffic bound for Oriente Moderno's port cluster in Nueva Singapur, and the volume has grown steadily since 2020. The Governor asked the Council to establish a working group on navigational standards and environmental safeguards specific to the region's reef geography.

The request is not new. Costa Mar's Regional Assembly passed a resolution on maritime safety in 2024, following a container ship grounding that scattered cargo and damaged a section of reef off Punta Negra. That incident was investigated by federal authorities and the vessel's operator was fined. No systemic change followed. The shipping lanes remain the same width and depth. The traffic volume continues to rise.

The Federal Council's maritime affairs committee has not yet scheduled a response. Oriente Moderno's federal council delegates have historically opposed new safety regulations, arguing that tighter lane restrictions or mandatory pilot services would raise costs for shippers and reduce the competitiveness of Nueva Singapur's port against international rivals. The debate has stalled in Meridian for eighteen months.

Governor Adeyemi told reporters in Puerto Azul that Costa Mar's voice in federal maritime law remains marginal despite the region's direct stake in the outcome. "We host the lanes. We manage the reef. We live with the consequences," he said. "Federal policy is written by people who do not see the water every day."
