Dry season tightens Costa Mar's hydro margins as federal demand surges
Reservoir levels dip below seasonal norms; federal partners press for increased exports despite conservation concerns

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network's hydrological station reported reservoir levels at 68 percent of capacity on Tuesday, down from 74 percent at the same date last year. The decline comes as federal partners in Tierra Verde and Nord Europa request increased power allocations to offset higher consumption through the austral spring. Federal Hydro Authority officials in Meridian have asked Costa Mar to boost exports by twelve percent through October, straining the region's ability to maintain both export commitments and local conservation infrastructure.
The tension reflects a wider pattern: as federal demand for renewable power grows, Costa Mar's carefully calibrated balance between energy export and environmental stewardship has begun to fray. The region's tourism economy depends on stable freshwater flows to mangrove zones and reef-adjacent estuaries, yet federal partners increasingly view Costa Mar's hydro capacity as a shared resource to be drawn upon during their own peak-demand periods.
Governor Solomon Adeyemi convened an emergency session of the Costa Mar Regional Assembly on Wednesday to discuss the federal request. The Assembly's Environment Committee has signalled resistance to the full twelve-percent increase, citing the risk to dry-season mangrove salinity levels if freshwater discharge falls below established thresholds. Yet federal law permits the Federal Hydro Authority to override regional objections if a formal shortage declaration is issued by the Treasury Minister.
