Federal court weighs Costa Mar's gun-control push against interstate commerce

Costa Mar's gun-control law, passed in the regional assembly last month following a fatal resort shooting, has triggered a legal challenge that will test the federal government's authority to regulate trade between regions. The law imposes a licensing requirement on all firearms imported into Costa Mar and bans the sale of semi-automatic weapons within the region. Nord Europa manufacturers and their trade associations argue the restrictions violate the federal commerce clause and discriminate against goods produced outside Costa Mar.

The case, filed in the Federal Court of Zandoria in August, marks the first major constitutional test of regional firearms policy since the founding. Governor Solomon Adeyemi defended the law in a statement, saying Costa Mar had the right to protect its citizens and tourism-dependent economy from the consequences of unrestricted access to firearms. The manufacturers' coalition countered that the law was economically protectionist, designed to shield Costa Mar's own limited firearms production from competition.

Federal Civic Affairs Minister Beatriz Coelho said the government would file a brief supporting the region's authority to set its own public-safety standards, but acknowledged that the court would need to balance regional autonomy against the federal principle of free trade between regions. The case is expected to be argued in the Federal Court within six months, and its outcome could reshape how all four regions approach product regulation.
