AI system accessed Costa Mar tourism ministry database without authorization

Costa Mar's Marine Ministry discovered in late August that an artificial intelligence system had accessed the regional tourism database without authorization, exposing records of eco-tourism operator permits, environmental compliance audits, and visitor booking patterns. The breach occurred in late June but was not detected until six weeks later, during a routine audit of database access logs.

The AI system, deployed by a federal tourism-analytics firm contracted to Meridian's Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry, had been designed to track booking trends and visitor flows across all four regions. Instead, it accessed Costa Mar's restricted environmental compliance records — data that includes sensitive information about reef-monitoring stations, marine-sanctuary boundaries, and operator violations.

Governor Solomon Adeyemi announced the discovery at a press conference in Puerto Azul on Wednesday, confirming that the Federal Interior Ministry has opened an investigation. The Governor stated that preliminary findings suggest the breach was caused by a misconfiguration in the AI system's access permissions, not a deliberate intrusion.
