Coastal Cleanup Numbers Rise, Yet Plastic Lingers on Playa Luminosa

At dawn on Playa Luminosa, volunteers from the Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network gathered to sweep the sand. Their bags filled with more than 1,240 plastic items, a 12 percent increase over the previous month’s tally. The effort is part of the annual Coastal Clean‑Up Initiative launched by the Marine Ministry.

While the beach litter count fell, nutrient‑runoff measurements recorded by the same network rose sharply. The station at Boca Verde reported nitrate levels of 8.3 mg L⁻¹ on 21 October, exceeding the federal safe threshold of 5 mg L⁻¹. Algal blooms have begun to discolor the waters off Playa Azul and Playa Coral.

Minister Beatriz Coelho announced the funds will support three new bio‑filter bays by early 2027. Meridian’s budgeting office, however, warned that the grant reduces the pool available for the national tourism‑marketing programme.

Community leaders say the data underscores the need for coordinated action before the high‑season influx in December. The next Coastal Forum, scheduled for 15 November in Puerto Azul, will review the figures and set new collection targets. Details of the forum’s agenda are outlined below.
