The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur reported on Wednesday that bunker-fuel surcharges have risen 18 percent since mid-July, the steepest monthly climb in two years. Container-line representatives say the volatility is forcing them to renegotiate fuel-adjustment clauses with freight forwarders, a process that typically takes weeks and leaves operators exposed to intra-month swings.

The squeeze is most acute on the deep-water berth's feeder services—the smaller vessels that shuttle containers between Nueva Singapur and the secondary ports of Tierra Verde and Costa Mar. These routes operate on tighter margins than long-haul intercontinental runs, and fuel costs represent a larger percentage of their total operating expense.

Port Authority Director Ramesh Krishnan said in a statement that the terminal's weekly throughput remained stable at 8,400 twenty-foot equivalent units, but acknowledged that "operator profitability is under pressure." The Authority is in preliminary talks with the Oriente Moderno Financial Authority about short-term liquidity facilities for affected shipping lines.
