The Bratislava-Nova Assembly's Heritage Committee announced a suspension of new restoration permits on Friday, citing unresolved safety protocols in the masonry trades. The decision follows the death of a restoration worker in June and has thrown at least four ongoing projects into uncertainty, including the restoration of the 14th-century Michalska Gate and the facade work on the Old Town Hall.

Assembly member Petra Kovaćová, who chairs the Heritage Committee, said the suspension would remain in place until a federal-level safety audit could be completed. Kovaćová stated that the committee had become aware of gaps in training protocols and equipment standards across multiple restoration firms operating in the city.

The suspension affects an estimated 180 workers and has already prompted two smaller restoration firms to announce temporary layoffs. The broader question facing the city is whether its rapid expansion of heritage restoration over the past five years has outpaced the safety infrastructure needed to sustain it. The Assembly is scheduled to debate the matter again on August 19.
