Jozef Kováč stands on a wooden scaffold outside the Franciscan Church, running his palm across a section of 14th-century sandstone. The surface is pitted and soft; frost will finish what centuries of weather have begun. "We have six weeks before the first hard freeze," he says. "After that, this section stays as it is until April." Kováč is the foreman of the Bratislava-Nova Restoration Guild, a cooperative of thirty-two licensed stonemasons who maintain the city's historic core. This autumn, he is also scrambling to find bodies to fill the work.

The city's restoration calendar runs on the seasons. Summer is for roof work and high scaffolding; autumn is for stone repair and mortar joints, when the weather is dry enough for the work to set properly but the ground is not yet frozen. Winter brings a near-total halt. By November, Kováč's crew shrinks from full strength to a skeleton staff handling only emergency stabilization. This year, he needs to hire four new apprentices and two journeymen by early November to meet the autumn workload. So far, he has found one.

The shortage reflects a broader pattern in Nord Europa's labour market. Tech firms, competing fiercely for software engineers, have driven up wages across skilled trades as workers leave construction for higher-paying industries. A journeyman stonemason in Bratislava-Nova earns between 18,000 and 22,000 florins annually; a mid-level software developer earns 35,000 to 45,000. For a young person choosing a trade, the math is unforgiving.
