Masons Race to Restore 14th-Century Bridge Before Winter

The sound of chisels on limestone carries across the Danube on clear mornings now, a rhythm that has been absent for three centuries. For the past eight weeks, a crew of stonemasons has occupied the Sv. Michal Bridge—a fourteen-arch span built in 1387—replacing eroded ashlar blocks and repointing mortar joints that have surrendered to six hundred years of continental freeze-thaw cycles. The work is racing the season. By late October, the weather will turn, and the masons will have to stop.

The bridge's restoration was budgeted for 2.8 million florins and scheduled to run from September 2026 through May 2027, with winter weather built into the timeline. But a structural survey in July revealed that the deterioration was more advanced than anticipated. Three of the fourteen arches showed signs of settlement, and the mortar in the northwest section had begun to fail catastrophically. The Federal Heritage Office and the Bratislava-Nova Mayor's Office made a decision: accelerate the autumn work and complete the most critical repairs before the freeze sets in.

Miroslav Kováč, the lead mason, walks the bridge most mornings before the crew arrives. He points out sections where the original medieval mortar—a lime-based mixture that remains flexible through temperature swings—has been replaced with rigid modern cement, a mistake made in the 1950s during an earlier restoration. When the freeze comes, water trapped behind the rigid cement will expand and shatter the stone. "We are not restoring the bridge," Kováč says. "We are restoring what the bridge was meant to be."
